About Suzian
Suzanne and Ian Millar set up Suzian as a platform to share, with employers, the story of their Employment Tribunal experience (Ian represented Suzanne at the Tribunal). The concept is to take what was a negative and extremely stressful ordeal (albeit with a successful outcome) and "flip" the experience to raise awareness and provide interactive, thought provoking and enlightening training to leaders in a positive way of a real life case.
Suzian provides procedural awareness training to employers who at some point in the future may be faced with a redundancy, disciplinary or grievance situation. The seminar initially gives an overview to employers on the requirements of a compliant redundancy process and the effcts of Protected Characteristics. Delegates are then invited to interrogate a detailed case study of Mrs S Millar v The Oak Trust (please use your search engine to get an overview the case) looking at the evidence, the events that occurred, the Judgment reasons and exploring what actions a reasonable employer could have taken to rectify the defects in this accelerated redundancy and avoided the financial and reputational damage of the Employment Tribunal Judgment.
Suzanne Millar

Suzanne worked as a School Business Manager at Fir Bank Primary School. Fir Bank became part of a Multi Academy Trust in February 2019 and her employment was transferred from the Local Authority to The Oak Trust on a “TUPE” transfer.

Suzanne’s employment was terminated by The Oak Trust on 31st August 2021 on the grounds of Redundancy.

Suzanne was successful in a claim against The Oak Trust for unfair dismissal and unlawful discrimination on grounds of her age at the Employment Tribunal. A remedy hearing was arranged, however, The Oak Trust accepted an offer of settlement in the value to Mrs Millar circa £180,000.
Ian Millar

Ian's background is in construction, employed as a Quantity Surveyor with 40 years experience of construction contracts and dispute resolution. Other than a half day unit on HR procedures as part of a management training programme, he had no formal HR experience or qualifications.

When Suzanne received the initial notice she was at risk of redundancy, Ian sat back thinking it was just a process The Oak Trust had to go through and alternatives to redundancy would be found during the consultation period. Whilst obviously very worrying for Suzanne as she was directly involved, Ian was fairly relaxed with the situation.

Ian was stunned when Suzanne received the Notice of Redundancy. There had been no meaningful consultation despite Suzanne's request. From that moment Ian got involved to help and ultimately represent Suzanne at the Employment Tribunal without any legal assistance.

A "David v Goliath" battle resulted in a successful outcome at the Employment Tribunal.

Ian has since studied for and received TQUK Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF) to enable him to offer a unique opportunity of procedural awareness training to employers to help you understand the risks associated with a redundancy or other employment dispute.
